Hi, thanks for dropping in.
Well, having dodged another bullet with winter snow, it looks like summer will actually be here soon. Cinque de Mayo came and went. (No, it does NOT celebrate ships with mayonnaise cargo going to the bottom of the ocean.) I’ve got to get the barbeque ready, take the cover off the pool, and begin my 4 month fight with pool algae. If it goes like last summer, the algae will win. The lawn battles begin also. I always seem to be a week behind my neighbors in mowing. Sigh.
The Montgomery County Bar Foundation’s Annual Bar Revue was in May. Along with Judge Barry Hamilton I run this annual satirical revue where current events, lawyers, judges and politicians are roasted. Think Saturday Night Live comes to Rockville.
My eldest son, Josh, graduated from law school at the end of May. We went up to Boston for the ceremony. He’ll be returning to Maryland to take the Bar and begin his legal career. His sister, Sarah, has started work in a Rockville law firm, while also attending Montgomery College, and singing and dancing her way into the hearts of everyone. Her twin brother, Eli, has been wrestling with the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club in Ithaca, NY, and starts Cornell University in the fall where he’ll join the wrestling team.
Maryland’s new laws will begin taking effect shortly. Notable among them are:
- There’s a ban on buying assault weapons, a 10 bullet limit on magazines and fingerprinting and target training requirements for handgun buyers.
- Medical marijuana will now be legal
- The death penalty has been abolished
- Cyberbullying is outlawed
- Off-shore wind energy is supported
- There will be a gas tax increase
- If you kill someone, you can’t inherit from them
- It’s now a primary offense to hold a cell phone while driving
- Public/private partnerships (P3) are now encouraged for things like private funding of roads
Well, that’s all for now. Stay tuned for updates. If you give us your email, we’ll add you to our e-newsletter list. newsletter@bienstock-donnelly.com
