LegalEase – June 2025

Dear Friends:

Hope you are all well.

As you may know, after 39 years on East Jefferson Street, we have moved offices to 21 Church Street, Suite 600, in Rockville.  We are still just a couple of blocks from the Circuit Court and the District Court.  There is free garage parking in our building.  Our phone numbers, fax number, and email addresses remain the same.

It has been great settling into the new space, and we’re excited for you to see it!

Your attorneys,
Steve Bienstock

GUARDIANSHIP FAQ

What is a Guardianship?

  • A guardianship is when a person is found by the Court to be unable to handle his or her own affairs, whether incapacitated by age, illness, or disability.  The Court appoints someone to protect that person’s well-being and belongings.  Most often, a guardianship is not needed if a Power of Attorney exists for that person.

How Does a Guardianship Differ from a Power of Attorney?

  • A Power of Attorney, financial or medical, is a document signed by someone while they are competent, giving another person the power to act for them in case they become incompetent to handle their own affairs.

Do I Need a Guardianship for My Loved One?

  • Every case is different. A guardianship may or may not be the best way to protect your loved one. We are happy to talk through your individual situation, and what your options might be. Feel free to call us at 301-251-1600, and we can set up a time to talk!

BELIEVE IT, OR DON’T!

  • A woman in Switzerland was prosecuted and fined over $4,000 for repeatedly feeding her neighbor’s cat so that it wouldn’t want to go home.
  • A man who attempted to climb Mount Fuji had to be rescued for altitude sickness twice: once when he tried to go up the mountain, and then again after he went back up the mountain to look for his phone.
  • Teenagers in Nairobi were charged with wildlife piracy after trying to sell 5,000 ants.
